Diving into existence

[en/nl]

Our existence is often fluid, changeable. Water represents a borderland, both physically and symbolically, and emphasises that fluidity. Throughout the centuries, (under)water worlds have been a source of inspiration in the arts, not only as subjects themselves but also as metaphors for escape, exploration or mysticism, for instance. So too in the work of visual artist Charlotte Beunders; from her home in Zierikzee, she dives and snorkels weekly in Zeeland's waters. Located 10 minutes by bike from her studio is the Netherlands' largest National Park, the Oosterschelde

After Charlotte's first dives, the question arose for her how to give form to the enchantment she experienced in her visual work. How do you capture the currents, reflective surfaces and the movement of light? A tricky task because light is refracted differently underwater, changing the perception of colour and shape. And how do you give form to something as complex and enigmatic as being and existence?

She resolved not to reproduce or copy one-to-one what she observed underwater, but to leave the mystery, the enigma of underwater life intact.

After a period of research, Charlotte found the form for her work. Dozens of miniatures, like fragments of memories, are the focal point of her paintings, drawing attention to both the small aspect of marine life and the larger interconnectedness of the underwater ecosystem. The abstract, iconic representations also relate to each other. Zooming in and out, connections are intuitively made in the paintings, which can also be freely associative and changeable.

‘... a mosaic of truths

(detail)

As meaning varies, a mosaic of truths is created. The resulting diversity gives wider meaning. Art too is not a static entity but rather an experience that can change, partly depending on the circumstances and who perceives the art multiple perspectives emerge. As in our daily lives, where by connecting the separate elements and entities, a broader perspective emerges, creating value in our existence.

Discover and experience for yourself how Charlotte shapes her experience of the underwater world in her work. Warmly welcome.
